Tattoo Aftercare
My Approach
Aftercare is a fundamental part of the tattoo process. These recommendations are designed to support proper healing and help preserve the quality of the design over time. They’re based on my professional experience and on safe, effective practices that have worked well for my clients. Every tattoo artist may suggest different instructions depending on their technique, so it’s always important to follow the guidance of the artist who did your tattoo.
Initial Protection
If I covered your tattoo with adhesive film (second skin), remove it 3 days after your session.
If it peels off earlier, you can remove it and let the skin breathe—this is totally fine.
Important: If you notice redness, itching, or irritation under the film, this may indicate an allergic reaction to the adhesive. In that case, remove the film immediately, wash the area with lukewarm water, and contact your tattoo artist.
If I used plastic wrap (non-adhesive film), remove it 2 to 4 hours after your session.
Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
Cleaning
Gently wash the tattoo 3 times a day for the first 2 days after removing the film.
Use lukewarm water and unscented, gentle soap (antibacterial is okay).
Pat dry with paper towels. Avoid cloth towels or sponges.
Moisturizing
Apply a thin layer of healing ointment (I recommend Aquaphor, but you can also use Hustle Butter or Bepanthen).
→ Apply it 3 times a day for 2 weeks.Avoid over-applying—your skin needs to breathe in order to heal properly.
General Guidelines
Do not re-bandage the tattoo unless I’ve instructed you to.
Do not scratch, pick, or peel scabs or flaking skin. Let your body heal naturally.
Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 3 weeks. Wear loose clothing over the tattoo or stay in the shade.
Do not submerge the tattoo in pools, hot tubs, the ocean, or bathtubs for 3 weeks. Quick showers are fine, but avoid hot water.
Try to avoid intense exercise or repetitive movement in the tattooed area during the first few days.
Once fully healed, apply sunscreen regularly to protect the color and details of the tattoo.
When to contact a professional
